So, we left our kids...

...even though they tried to stowaway with the luggage. Luke and I are celebrating our ten year anniversary this month, so we decided to do something we had never done and go on a little getaway. It was a big deal for me...I have a hard time being physically separated from my kids for any length of time...and I am slightly neurotic. It's a family trait; I come by it honestly.
My dear generous mother flew all the way from Boston, leaving her tulips in the spring, to come and babysit, so we knew that the girls were in the best possible hands. So I taped an envelope containing our health insurance and prescription benefits cards along with a signed and dated letter giving my mom full authority to make medical decisions for our children to the inside of our kitchen cabinet, and we were off!

We spent the first night at a resort on a vineyard in Temecula. It was beautiful and relaxing.

Our main destination, however, was Santa Catalina Island. One of the biggest reasons for us choosing this spot was the glowing recommendation of Luke's grandparents, who are pretty much our heroes when it comes to marriage. They have had a few getaways here themselves, and it was so fun to picture them here in years gone by.

On the ferry over to the island, I must admit that I felt a few pangs as I thought about the miles and miles of ocean and desert that lay between me and my babies, but then the harbor town of Avalon came into view.

gorgeous...

Our hotel was tiny and right on the water. I loved the European feel of it...no elevator, real keys (instead of key-cards that you have to fiddle with until a green light clicks on)...the sweet proprietors even had chilled champagne and a "Happy Anniversary" note waiting in our room when we checked in.

The next day I did a zipline tour. There was only one spot left on the morning tour, so my sweet self-sacrificing husband offered it to me. I took it. Carpe Diem and all that.

Here is a super nerdy picture of me in all my zipline safety gear holding the zipline contraption thing upside down...smooth.

The tour itself was amazing. I must admit the first run was REALLY high and I felt a little shaky, but it was so much fun.

My sweet self-sacrificing husband hiked up and took pictures...that's me whizzing by on one of the lower runs.

In the afternoon we rented a sea kayak and explored the little coves and beaches north of the town...I loved paddling over the kelp forest...the water there is crystal clear, and the kelp looks like huge tree trunks growing down towards the bottom with bright orange and silver fish flashing through them. We got very close to a pair of inquisitive sea lions, too. No Great Whites, though...sorry Papa.

I also was kind of in love with the Casino. It is not, much to Luke's disappointment, an actual casino. It was a dance hall and theater, and it still shows movies in the evenings. I loved the outside, but I was too cheap to pay 20$ to see the interior.

I wish I could have seen it in its heyday, with Big Bands playing in the dance hall.

The Art Deco mosaics in the porch were my favorite...

The mornings were beautiful. I got to enjoy them because I couldn't sleep in. Apparently I sleep much better squished onto the ten or eleven inches on the edge of our mattress while getting pummeled intermittently throughout the night by toddler heels. So I would go for walks while my husband slept in.
It was very strange to just leave the hotel room with nothing but my room key (and my cell phone of course...Nanny might have called and I might have had to sprint down to the ferry dock or helipad and beg, borrow, or steal passage home to Phoenix immediately.) But seriously, neuroses aside, it was really nice to be able to walk as long and as far as I wanted sans stroller and baby wipes.

I have no idea why the pictures on this post are so far apart...sorry.

Driving home, Luke and I talked about when we would ever do something like this again. I said, "maybe for our twentieth", before doing the math in my head and realizing we'd be leaving a 16 year old Audrey...a terrifying prospect. Not to create a self-fulfilling prophecy, but something tells me Audrey is going to need a fair amount of adult supervision in her teenage years.
...so it was fun while it lasted! Thank you thank you thank you Nanny, and Steve and Cindy and Emily for keeping my girls happy and safe! And thank you to my wonderful husband, who has made the past ten years the best of my life!

Our Easter Egg Hunt

Our family had an Easter Egg hunt in our back yard this year...

Abby checking out her much bigger and more mobile competition...

Look at the determination on her face!

I thought it might be fun to hide some confetti eggs this year...

...some people were good sports about it...

...and some people were not.

Happy Easter!

Opening Night

The Cincinnati Reds happened to be playing the D-backs on opening night, so the Speier family had themselves a fun family excursion courtesy of Grandpa. A great time was had by all.
My husband loves to buy inappropriately large amounts of popcorn for the girls. This is how the scenario plays out ( it's happened several times at the movies.)

Dad goes to buy snacks.

Dad comes back with a disturbing amount of popcorn.

Dad doles out the popcorn in disturbing portions.

Mom gives him an incredulous, disapproving look.

Dad grins and shrugs.

Three girls gaze up at Dad in adoration whilst shoving disturbing amounts of popcorn into their faces.

Mom watches in horror as her two-year-old's stomach visibly swells to disturbing proportions. Kateri loved it.

She also loved catching glimpses of Grandpa in the dugout.

What she didn't love were these creepy, big-headed former D-backs stars, who had a race around the field before touring the stands and coming a little too close for Kateri's comfort.

When I asked her if she liked those guys she replied, "No, I don't like them...I like the tiny heads...the tiny ones!" pointing down at the actual players, whose head did, I guess, look pretty tiny in comparison.
Anyway, we had a great time, even if our team lost. Thanks, Grandpa!

Video

Untitled from Allison Speier on Vimeo.

I'm trying out this way of uploading videos from my new camera.
This is Kateri's favorite song. I'll include the lyrics since she isn't as articulate as her little cousin Fi.

One, Two, Three, Four, Five
Once I caught a fish alive
Six, Seven, Eight, Nine, Ten
Then I let him go again.
Why did you let him go?
Because he bit my finger so.
Which finger did he bite?
This little pinky on the right.

Spring and other things

Spring is back, and so are the orange blossoms. We've been spending a hefty chunk of our time in our backyard.
Kateri knows that the best spot is under the orange tree.
She was "being Alice" that day. In fact, I let her wear her Alice dress out and about while we ran errands, violating one of my personal rules. I used to scoff at other parents I would see in the supermarket, with their little girls in polyester Disney Princess dress-up gear, and their little boys in Spider-man unitards that really didn't fit them anymore...but it is amazing how many opportunities motherhood lends for eating your own words. Besides, her beautiful costume was hand-made with love by Nanny, and as she grows, it is getting shorter and shorter, so I might at well let her enjoy it while she can.
Especially since she can use all the help she can get in looking feminine. Looking at this picture of mini-me Luke, I can forgive the well-meaning strangers who say "Hello, Little Fella" to her if she is not wearing pigtails and pink.
I also dusted off my sewing machine and ignored the half-finished comforter I've been needing to finish for Kateri's bed. I made Lili an Easter dress instead from some pretty fabric Nanny had given me and a pretty straightforward tutorial I found online.
I really like the idea of the back, even if the execution leaves something to be desired...
...the good thing is Lili still gets excited when I make her things, and doesn't notice all the imperfections...

Lili and I went to Dallas

Lili has been asking me to go to Dallas to visit her beloved uncle and Godfather for about 6 years now. So, we finally went. Just the two of us. I feel like I have less and less time with my firstborn as her school commitments grow, so it was really nice to have some one-on-one time together. Even the plane ride was fun!
This is the main reason for our trip. Evangeline Elizabeth. My adorable goddaughter.
We got to see two other precious, precocious, and generally hilarious nieces as well.

We also got to see my fair cuz and her lovely Maggie.
But it was just so nice to get to hang out with my family. Looking back on our trip makes me miss my two brothers more than ever, but it was so nice to get to see a slice of their life in Dallas. Lili, needless to say, had the time of her life. Tooling around Grapevine...

...getting her first taste of video games...Star Wars Lego and the Wii...
...and of course, getting plenty of snuggle time with the sweetest little
new member of the Catholic Church. Oh Evie, I miss you so much! Especially your double chin...

Anyway, it was a great trip; long overdue. The baptism itself was beautiful, held in the chapel at UD. I hadn't been back to campus since I was 2 months pregnant with Lili, so it was a little strange. I did get to see some of my old professors and ducked into the Art building to inhale its old distinctive smell...I don't know what creates it: plaster? drying oil paint? but I love it, and it brought back a slew of happy memories of visiting my big brother as he finished some project, or working there myself into the wee hours of the morning.

Anyway, the other highlights of the trip included:

Exploring downtown Grapevine and seeing glassblowing and Guy Fieri

Watching Leah dance her way through life

Getting Fifi to repeat difficult-to-pronounce phrases like "bilateral symmetry"

Eating all of the delicious meals that were made for us

Going for a moonlit swim with my fam

It was a great trip. We'll have to do it again soon. Thank you so much Jon and Katie, Joe and Becca, and Nanny and Papa!

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

We did our celebrating for St. Patrick's Day a little early. Last Saturday was the Burch family's renowned block party.
Our kids get excited every year for this party...

but not as excited as this guy. I think it is his favorite day of the year, second only to the Purple
Seriously, he and Lili were pacing around our house, (fully dressed and ready to go) a good two hours before the party started.

Not that I blame him. Guinness? Gorgeous spring Phoenix weather? Serious and intense cornhole tournament? What's not to love?

My favorite is how the kids all look after a few hours of green lemonade, green snowcones, and green cupcakes; all churned together in their little stomachs by non-stop bouncing in the bounce house. They look like this:

Sorry Audrey, but you look like you've had a few too many.
I'm sure a few of the adults looked like this at the end of the night, too.

Anyway, just as the kids are crashing down off of their sugar highs and nursing various bounce-house related injuries, the awesome live music starts:

This was definitely Kateri's favorite part of the night.

Thanks for a great day, Burches! You and your neighbors sure know how to throw a party!
